what if you were a spaceship?
more calligraphic exploration
Decide who you are,
decide what you want to do,
and then do it
because it is surely possible

calligraphic doodles
In one of my classes this week, I had the honor of participating in a workshop with calligrapher/designer Karen Charatan. I'm not much of a designer, so this kind of stuff isn't exactly the most riveting thing in the world to me, but seeing her make O's with perfectly shaped centers and B's with precisely the right proportions was still pretty impressive.
Here is one of the pages of lettering I came up with. I responded to the texture of overlapping words, and the repetition of trying to find the perfect shape for a letter. I'll definitely be experimenting more with calligraphy now that I got a feel for it.

life drawing 10/12
I'm taking Stephen Gaffney's life drawing class this semester, learning so much. Stephen pushes us into a way of thinking about drawing, where every line is free to be imperfect, but carefully and consciously made with the goal of being perfect. Does that make sense? Basically high focus, where every line is used to describe the form. The goal is to be able to make that perfectly descriptive line quickly with the energy you can only get from spontaneous reaction to what you see.
It forces you to be much more involved in the drawing process, but it can be very tiring to maintain that focus. I still fall to my old way of doing things, scratching and searching around until an image sort of emerges, with lots of unnecessary information, but I am having moments where I feel very connected to the line. It's helping so much with animation, since being able to make quick and confident drawings is so crucial for sleep schedules and keeping mental breakdowns at bay.
Here are some short drawings from my last class.

fun fact: the last drawing on the right was done left-handed :)

land of buddha font revival
Inspired by this original storefront, I studied the existing letters and imagined what other letters might look like in an advertisement for the store.
I decided the best way to achieve the style would be to use a brush and ink. The brush gave my letters the energy they needed, but much work needed to be done in Photoshop to clean them up.

first post
I thought I would make my first post my latest animation exercise.
Imagine he's diving after an invisible fish that swims just out of reach each time he tries to catch it.
